Thanks to the generosity of donors, the Multidisciplinary and Microscopy Laboratories at the Medical College have undergone a complete transformation, becoming cutting-edge research and teaching facilities at AKU and in Pakistan.
Established in the 1980s, these facilities have been integral to research and laboratory-based teaching of undergraduate and graduate programmes at the Medical College. Over the past 35 years, these labs have fostered a robust research culture in biomedical sciences and provided an enabling environment for students to ignite their curiosity.
The recent transformation of the labs is in response to the growing need for integrating contemporary practices, techniques, and technology for pioneering research in biomedical sciences.
Upgraded to Biosafety Level 2 standards, the revamped labs provide unparalleled opportunities for novel research and innovation in teaching. Some of the latest facilities include digital PCR and advanced gene sequencing technologies. These and other upgrades empower faculty and researchers to conduct advanced research in immunology, virology, molecular and cancer biology and drug development, strengthening AKU’s role as a research-led University.
“The renovated labs exemplify international standards, ensuring compliance with rigorous safety protocols. Our faculty find the new lab an absolute pleasure to conduct their research in," remarked a faculty member. “We now have access to many more advanced facilities like never before, making the labs an amazing ground for research."
Students echo similar sentiments. “It doesn’t look like a typical laboratory. It’s uplifting, bright and well-organised. We enjoy being here. This looks like something you see in medical shows.”
By fostering a collaborative and intellectually stimulating environment, these labs serve as incubators for aspiring researchers, nurturing their professional and academic growth. They reflect AKU’s commitment to excellence, and innovation, and provide a conducive environment for teaching, training and research, setting a new benchmark in academic facilities in the region.
