​​Introduction

The Global Mobility Programmes have been offering internship opportunities through both onsite and virtual placements. These placements are built on a strong mentorship framework that brings together international students and professionals within AKDN.  This framework provides students with invaluable work-integrated learning experiences, allowing them to collaborate with diverse teams spanning more than 5 AKDN agencies across 10 countries.

Our success is rooted in our ability to offer students transformative internship experiences. These experiences are made possible through one-on-one mentorship with industry experts and meaningful project work that carries a global impact. Our mentors play a pivotal role in defining clear project objectives and learning outcomes, facilitating knowledge sharing, and guiding students toward promising career pathways. In addition, mentors gain a unique opportunity to enhance their own leadership and interpersonal skills, engage in self-reflection, and access international universities worldwide.​

Why should you be a Mentor?

Mentoring serves as an amplifier for leadership skills but is often mutually beneficial for both the mentor and mentee to explore new ideas, new knowledge, and tackle challenging issues. ​​​

  1. ​Development of a potential talent pipeline of candidates from qualified applicants.
  2. ​Completion of designated project(s) or deliverables.​
  3. AKU’s and mentor’s exposure and recognition among global universities.
  4. An opportunity to collect new perspectives and ideas from students regarding processes, organizational branding, and more.
  5. Assistance with special project work by international students.
  6. Means to obtain affordable workforce support.
  7. An opportunity to obtain needed support in a flexible, virtual manner which does not require physicalfacilities, equipment, or on-site supervision – for the virtual internship.​

​​What we Provide for the Mentors

  • Assistance in drafting Terms of References for internship positions;

  • Capacity development sessions on becoming a virtual mentor;

  • Comprehensive orientation sessions on AKDN;

  • Ongoing support through monitoring, evaluation, and troubleshooting as required;

  • Support to mentors to host a full department or agency orientation for interns;

  • Active advertising and recruitment of interns for potential mentors;

  • Info-sessions for interested students at partner institutions; and,

  • Communications and promotion materials.


As a Mentor

  • A minimum of 3 hours per week for mentorship with your intern;
  • Submit a periodic evaluation for your intern;
  • Engage in weekly calls to review expectations for development;
  • Identify clear project goals and weekly deadlines for your intern;
  • Work with your intern to help them dev​elop and reach their personal and professional goals;
  • Provide a complete departmental orientation to help interns integrate with your team;
  • Evaluate interns on an ongoing basis and provide feedback to programme coordinators; and
  • At the end of the internship period, conduct a proper evaluation and debrief of their overall performance.

  • Mentorship Application Deadline: 1st December ​2023

  • Spring 2024 Internship Period: from 5th February 2024

  • Summer 2024 Internship Period: from13th May 2024 and 10th June 2024 (two start dates)

  • Fall 2024 Internship Period: from 16th September 2024
