Dr Amyna Sultan, MBBS ’89 was honoured as the Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) by Her Royal Highness Princess Anne at an investiture ceremony held at Windsor Castle, on July 14, 2015.
Dr Sultan, the first AKU alumna to receive the OBE, was recognised for her services to medicine, health care and eye surgery in Papua New Guinea.
Dr Sultan is an American Board of Ophthalmology certified ophthalmologist with fellowship in cornea and ocular immunology from Harvard University. She was the Field Medical Director of ORBIS International and has also served AKU as an Assistant Professor, Ophthalmology, Department of Surgery. She is currently the Director and Acting CEO of the Pacific International Hospital, the first private tertiary care facility in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, where she has served in several capacities; as an Ophthalmologist, Medical Director and CEO over the last 14 years.
“I owe this one to the Chancellor of AKU,” said an elated Dr Sultan, attributing her success and inspiration to serve, to His Highness the Aga Khan, for making available the world-class medical education she received at AKU.
She recounted the remark Princess Anne made on hearing that she was from Pakistan and a graduate of AKU: "Then service must come naturally."
Established in 1917 by King George V the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire commonly referred to as OBE rewards individuals for extraordinary services in a variety of fields both military and civil.
The award was announced in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List 2014: Commonwealth in June last year.
