Pakistan’s prime minister has appointed three people associated with AKU to the seven-member board of governors of the nation’s top public health body, the National Institute of Health, NIH, which is leading the public health response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The NIH, an autonomous organisation under Pakistan’s Ministry of National Health Services Regulations and Coordination, is responsible for public health research, diagnostic services, vaccine production and the control of infectious diseases.
AKU faculty Professor Zulfiqar A. Bhutta, Professor Asim Beg and alumnus Professor Adeel Butt, MBBS ’90, currently based at the Weill Cornell Medical College in the US , will join the NIH’s board for a three-year term that will see them work to strengthen the organisation’s capacity to inform health policy.
The NIH’s new board of governors will work alongside Pakistan’s health minister and other leading policymakers on a range of policy priorities in the field of health.
The NIH is a World Health Organization collaborating center for viral diagnostics, a regional reference laboratory for polio, and a national reference center for diagnosis of influenza. It also works as the National Appellate Laboratory for quality control of drugs and is the public analyst laboratory for the quality control of food for Islamabad.
