CIME Nairobi was recently privileged to capture 4 days from the busy schedule of Dr Carlos Chidiac, of Gaumard, to help in the installation, trouble-shooting diagnostics and training for the state-of-the art peri-natal and birthing simulator Victoria. CIME team and invited faculty of the university and hospital attended.
This provided the opportunity to impart vital information and some of the little-known facts of the latest technologies.
To test your knowledge: Victoria was so-called because
- She is the Queen of all simulators
- Her potential is as vast as Lake Victoria
- She is Victorious in the fight to achieve maximum fidelity for childbirth simulation
- She was so-called after the Secret project tasked with her development
- She is as spectacular as Victoria Falls (Answer: in next edition!)
For the demonstration, Dr Carlos utilized the latest Holographic technologies to lay a 3-D hologram over the womb during childbirth: this showed the progression of the baby through the birth canal and indicated what measures might be successful in freeing the baby should its shoulders get trapped. Observers could also see the holographic view projected onto a large screen. This provides a fantastic visual insight and greater depth of understanding to common complications, as well as the practical manoevres to deploy in their correction.
In a nutshell, this latest technology renders the Virtual Reality approach a dead end. Using 3-D holograms to supplement the environment allows the student to work in a real space with real objects, developing absolutely authentic psychomotor as well as cognitive skills. We're looking forward to acquiring this technology and using it more widely.
