CIME as official 'Knowledge Partners' of The MagnifiScience Centre organised a series of simulation-based workshops 'Magnifi-Sim' in the first quarter of 2022. This series was aimed at informing the public on commonly encountered healthcare situations, using the latest techniques of simulation based education with technology.
These series of workshops were spread over four weeks, with a different theme each week. These were as below:
How to restart the heart – the participants learnt about hands-only CPR technique.
First aid for falls – this theme focused on the approach to and the initial management of a collapsed person which could be due to hypoglycemia, postural hypotension, seizures and cardiac arrest.
Stop the bleed – this theme helped participants understand the importance of timely control of bleeding and busted myths around the topic.
Making Zombies in Medicine: Art for Science – the last theme focused on the technique of Moulage and its use in medical education
These workshops were open to any visitor of the science museum from ages 10 and above. Each workshop included a variety of teaching methods to cater to the learning needs of the participants from diverse age groups and included theme-specific skits, interactive session, videos, quizzes, worksheets and the most important of all, hands-on practice on simulators brought from CIME. A total of 24 student volunteers from SPIE benefitted from their involvement in planning and delivering these workshops. More than 250 visitors attended including kids of school age, teachers, medical students, parents and the MagnifiScience centre staff.
The interactive teaching and learning methodologies encouraged the audience to engage and exercise critical thinking as they attempted stimulating worksheets and participated in the quizzes and hands-on practice on the simulators. The interactive style of these workshops also provided a comfortable and a non-threatening environment that allowed questions from the audience. The information provided during these sessions were an eye-opener for the most as they busted a lot of myths embedded in the society.
These workshops benefitted not only the common public visiting the science museum, but also, the student volunteers from SPIE who found these workshops to be an excellent learning opportunity. The Magnifi-Sim series will be repeated again in the future and more topics will be added.
