Professor Lukoye Atwoli, Dean at AKU Medical College, East Africa has been elected as an International Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (APA).
The APA is the largest psychiatric association in the world with more than 37,000 physician members specializing in the diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and research of mental illnesses. APA's vision is to ensure access to quality psychiatric diagnosis and treatment.
Speaking while accepting the appointment, Prof Atwoli said, “It is a great honour to me and to the AKU family to be elected as an International Fellow of the APA. I look forward to working with my colleagues as a member of the Association to promote universal and equitable access to the highest quality care for all people affected by mental illness not only in Africa but globally."
According to a statement by the Association, “Prof Atwoli joins an elite group of psychiatrists with this honorary distinction who continue to make significant contributions to the field of psychiatry. International Fellow status is an honor that reflects his dedication to the work of the APA and signifies his allegiance to the psychiatric profession."
All newly appointed International Fellows are publicly recognized at the Convocation of Fellows and Distinguished Fellows, which is held every year during APA's annual meeting.
Last year, Prof Atwoli was elected as president of the African College of Neuropsychopharmacology (AfCNP) for a period of two years. The AfCNP is a non-for-profit association dedicated to the provision of evidence-based psychopharmacology information to health care practitioners, trainees, service users, and other key stakeholders in Africa.
Prof Atwoli has received numerous accolades since he started his medical practice more than 20 years ago. He leads and participates in mental health research locally and globally. He is also a member of the WHO World Mental Health Surveys Consortium, which is the leading collaborative project in psychiatric epidemiology globally.
