The Aga Khan University Medical College (MC) and School of Nursing and Midwifery (SONAM) have been honoured with a prestigious teaching award for their successful collaboration in healthcare education. The partnership achieved a remarkable milestone by conducting two Inter-professional Certificate Courses in Liver Disease in 2021 and 2022, the first-of-its-kind postgraduate inter-professional educational (IPE) activity aimed at promoting collaborative practice between healthcare professionals and promoting evidence-based management in the care of patients with liver diseases.
This innovative course was a blended learning simulation programme designed to address the major health challenges of hepatitis B and C, which affect 335 million people globally, and fatty liver disease, which has assumed alarming proportions globally. CIME was a major partner in this effort, with numerous simulation sessions being conducted which dealt with the different presentations of liver disease. The collaboration between MC, SONAM and CIME aimed to create awareness among healthcare providers regarding the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of patients with liver disease.
The course was a great success, with a diverse mix of general physicians, trainees, and nurses from both the public and private sector participating. The programme encouraged physicians and nurses to work alongside each other as a healthcare team to deliver care to patients suffering from liver diseases, demonstrating improvement in self-efficacy, post test scores, and excellent evaluations by participants.
This alliance between MC, SONAM and CIME is a shining example of inter-professional education in Pakistan, demonstrating that physicians and nurses can learn together in a healthy and positive environment, with benefits for all stakeholders. The success of this collaboration serves as an inspiration to others in the field of healthcare, highlighting what can be achieved when healthcare professionals work together towards a common goal.
