The Aga Khan University Graduate School of Media and Communications (GSMC) students and alumni were awarded at Media Council of Kenya's Annual Journalism Excellence Awards (AJEA) 2023. The awards which were held at Safari Park Hotel on May 4th 2023 saw journalists from TV, print and radio feted for the different works they have done.
Henix Obuchunju an alumnus of the Master of Arts in Digital Journalism Programme (MADJ) and a fellow of our Excellence in Journalism Fellowship was awarded the Best Investigative Story – Radio, while Lilys Njeru, a student of the MADJ programme was awarded the Best Sports Reporter – Print. John-Allan Namu, a participant of the Executive Masters in Media Leadership and Innovation Programme (EMMLI) was awarded the Best Investigative Story – Digital.
Two of our Excellence in Journalism Fellows were also nominated for the awards. Maryagatha Gichana's story dubbed 'Uhuru Bag Tampon' was nominated for the Gender Reporting – Print category, while Caren Waraba's story dubbed 'Kiu Yangu' was nominated for the Environment and Climate Change Reporting – Radio.
AJEA is a critical initiative of the Media Council of Kenya that recognises and awards journalists who have demonstrated adherence to the Code of Conduct for the Practice of Journalism in Kenya, and creativity in gathering and presentation of editorial media content. According to the council, a record 1,256 entries were received for this year's Annual Journalism Excellence Awards (AJEA), up from 1,142 entries in 2022, with Gender Reporting category leading with 193 entries. The Nomination Panel chaired by Rachel Ombaka comprised of Andrew Teyie, Ann Mikia, Odeo Sirari, Wanyama Chebusiri, Owino Opondo, David Okwembah and Secretary Paul Nabiswa.
