In 2019, Sabrina Zahor received her acceptance letter from AKU's Institute for Muslim Civilizations (ISMC) to pursue a master's degree in Muslim Cultures. She left her home country Tanzania and jetted off to the United Kingdom to a whole new experience.
“I was particularly interested in the research that had been done by the faculty and the first thing I did was look at the publications. I saw how vast and broad it was which piqued my interest, as well as the language immersion programme included in the course."
Sabrina has always had an interest in Muslim societies living in sub-Saharan Africa. She feels they are hardly represented in Islamic scholarship compared to other regions. With a background in communications, she is passionate about telling the stories of these societies in East Africa.
“My expectation when joining ISMC was that I would indulge in a lot of research that would also shed light on ethnographic content for sub-Saharan Africa, and that would also feature people from my background. This was my driving force – to learn more in terms of Islamic content."
And learn she did. Sabrina graduated in 2021 with an MA in Muslim Cultures – a degree that she says reignited her passion for academia in community development. She is currently using the skills she gained in planning and sourcing information to deliver communications solutions for an environmental consultancy firm that works across the world. In her role, she manages communications for the African and the Middle East markets which she says she is confident in covering since being exposed to the regions' history and culture during her master's programme.
Sabrina aspires to build knowledge and research that is homegrown to build and develop societies in Africa.
