On Pakistan’s 76th Independence Day, three distinguished members of AKU’s community were bestowed with civil honours by the President of Pakistan, Dr Arif Alvi.
Founding Director of the Centre of Excellence in Women and Child Health and the Institute for Global Health and Development at the Aga Khan University, Dr Zulfiqar Bhutta, was conferred with the Sitara-e-Imtiaz. This is not the first time that Dr Bhutta is being honoured with a national award. In 2017 he was conferred with the President’s Pride of Performance award for his exceptional contributions to the country. Earlier this year, Dr Bhutta was bestowed with the John Dirks Canada Gairdner Global Health Award for outstanding achievements in global health research. He has also been awarded the prestigious Henry G. Friesen International Prize in Health Research for his contributions to global child health.
The late Dr Salahuddin Shaikh established the foundation of the Department of Paediatrics & Child Health at AKU, and set up its first Paediatrics Ward and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Dr Shaikh was posthumously awarded the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz. The AKU family continues to honour and celebrate the legacy of Dr Shaikh.
Dr Shahid Baig, Professor at AKU’s Department of Biological and Biomedical Sciences was also awarded his second civil honour, the Hilal-e-Imtiaz for his contributions in the field of science. Professor Baig currently serves as the Chairman of the Pakistan Science Foundation and was conferred the Sitara-e-Imtiaz in 2015 for his transformative work in identifying disease-causing genes in the Pakistani population.
AKU congratulates Dr Bhutta, Dr Shaikh and Dr Baig for their exemplary achievements. We are fortunate to have individuals of such high caliber as part of our academic family, who continue to inspire our students, faculty and staff with their commitment to the University’s mission.
