The Chair of Paediatrics & Child Health at Aga Khan University, Dr Fyezah Jehan, received the prestigious Paul Harris Award from Rotary International at a ceremony in Karachi for her work on malnutrition. The Rotary Club of Karachi, in collaboration with the Rotary Club of St. Catharines South and the Trust for Malnutrition and Stunted Growth, hosted the event to recognise her “outstanding service and dedication to the community". The Trust for Malnutrition and Stunted Growth (TMSG) was created through a partnership between Rotary Canada and Rotary Karachi.
“Our clinical teams in the communities, along with colleagues from the human resource department at AKU were the first to work with this Trust for the rapid diagnosis and management of moderate to severe malnutrition of children and pregnant women in the community," said Dr Fyezah Jehan.
Ready-to-use-therapeutic-food (RUTF), a commonly recommended food for the treatment of malnutrition was unavailable for use, thus ready-to-use-supplemental-food (RUSF) was used instead. Supplement procured by the TMSG was given to patients through the four peri-urban clinics of the Department of Paediatrics in Korangi, Karachi. Through this, the team were able to reach more than 10,000 pregnant women and children at risk of malnutrition. A large number of children and women were successfully treated and many were referred appropriately.
One Rotary member said “ Dr Jehan and her team were a catalyst for this work that has led to recruitment of many more hospitals and agencies by the Trust towards this noble cause".
The Paul Harris Award, named after the founder of Rotary International, Paul Harris, is the highest form of recognition given by Rotary Clubs to honour significant efforts in service and humanitarian work. Recipients of the Paul Harris Award often receive a certificate and a pin as symbols of their contribution to the Foundation's charitable and educational programmes. Other people who have received it are Jimmy Carter and Jonas Salk of Polio Vaccine.
