The Aga Khan University (AKU) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Kilifi County Government that will increase collaborative efforts in research and training. The MoU aims to coordinate development activities and research programmes of mutual interest, fostering academic and clinical partnerships between the two institutions.
The MoU signifies a commitment to enhance research capacity and educational opportunities while supporting the provision of healthcare services to the people of Kilifi County and their catchment population.
“Kilifi County and Aga Khan University have a long-standing relationship that has benefited the community in many areas, such as youth, sports, gender, health, education, research, and training. As we sign this Memorandum of Understanding on research and training, we solidify our partnership and make a commitment to one another for the benefit of the communities we serve,” said Kilifi County Governor, Hon Gideon Mung’aro.
Under the terms of the MoU, AKU and Kilifi County Government will collaborate on various initiatives, including learners' placements, research projects, and training programmes. The agreement emphasizes the importance of mutual respect, ethical conduct, and professional standards in all collaborative activities.
“This MoU is important as it will allow Aga Khan University and Kilifi County Government to co-create solutions right from the outset for local communities that will ensure future sustainability. Evidence takes a very long time to be implemented. Partnerships like this are one of the best ways to address this knowledge translation gap,” said Prof Salim Virani, AKU’s Vice Provost, Research.
The MoU Implementation Committee, comprised of representatives from both institutions, will play a central role in coordinating and supervising its execution. The team will monitor progress, address challenges, and review the effectiveness of the collaborative efforts.
Both parties have expressed their commitment to upholding the terms and principles outlined in the MoU, with a shared vision of advancing education, research, and healthcare delivery in Kilifi County.
AKU’s research projects in Kilifi County have been instrumental in improving the quality of healthcare and enhancing access to affordable health services in the county. Through partnership with the Kilifi County Government, various AKU research entities have been able to tremendously impact the lives of the people of Kilifi County.
