Representatives of The Federation of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the UK (RCP) visited AKU to explore opportunities for certifying the institution to conduct PACES exam for MRCP. The Membership of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the United Kingdom (MRCP-UK) diploma is an essential requirement for physicians who train in a medical specialty in the UK. It is an examination that the three royal colleges of physicians of the UK have in common regarding general medicine.
The delegation including Dr Tanzeem Raza, Federation International Medical Director, Assessment, and Professor Aamir Ghafoor Khan, Federation Lead PACES Islamabad & Lahore, met with AKU's senior leadership and local coordinating committees to get an overview of the institution, in particular, the Medical College.
Many of our faculty members are fellows of the RCP and are qualified to become examiners of the MRCP. The delegation interacted with local faculty who are interested in training to become PACES examiners, and since the RCP requires the availability of real patients instead of simulations, a guided tour of our Centre for Innovation in Medicine Education (CIME), and medical wards and clinics, was also arranged.
AKU hosted the MRCS(B) Part II exam scheduled over three days for the first time in September 2023, and for the second time in March 2024, organized by PGME and CIME. Candidates from across Pakistan were examined by both local and international examiners, following which the President of Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh Professor Rowan Parks visited Pakistan and left with an incredibly positive impression about AKU, the faculty and facilities.
Our Vice Dean, Dr Muhammad Tariq was appointed as the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh's Regional Adviser for Karachi, Sindh and Balochistan in August of last year.
