Ciano Wanyoike has always dreamed of becoming a doctor. However, life had other plans, and he decided to pursue a degree in Forensic Science. When the opportunity to study undergraduate medicine at AKU presented itself, he seized it, and his dream is gradually coming true.
He recently completed his first year and reflects on the journey so far.
“Securing a spot at AKU was a rollercoaster. Receiving the financial aid letter was a game-changer. Knowing that a huge chunk of my tuition fees was covered lifted an immense weight off my shoulders. It was more than just financial relief; it was a passport to pursuing my dream without constant worry. That moment, when the financial puzzle finally fit together, solidified my place at AKU and ignited a sense of excitement and possibility.
My first year was a whirlwind. Balancing rigorous academics with personal growth was challenging but rewarding. Winning second place in the President’s Challenge for Climate Solutions group contest was a highlight, proving that my analytical nature has its perks. This annual challenge, posed by the president, aims to inspire collective solutions and raise awareness about climate change and its impact on our planet.
AKU’s supportive environment made the transition smoother. My biggest challenge was navigating interpersonal relationships. Learning to communicate effectively was also a steep learning curve. I had to balance my assertive personality with building connections.
I often came across as overconfident or assertive, which hindered my ability to connect with others. Being older, I unintentionally projected an air of superiority. This was a difficult period for me as it negatively impacted my self-esteem. With time and the guidance of a mentor, I realized the importance of balancing my authentic self with the need to adapt my communication style. While I've made significant progress, I continue to refine my interpersonal skills.
To manage stress and maintain balance, I turned to music. Playing the guitar and singing has become a valuable outlet for me.
As I look back, I'm grateful for the experiences, both triumphs and challenges. They've shaped me into the medical student I am today. With each passing day, I'm one step closer to realizing my dream of becoming a doctor.”
