Bees and other pollinators are indispensable for successful crop production and maintaining biodiversity. However, many Tanzanians, including farmers, conservationists, and researchers, lack a deep understanding of these vital creatures. To address this gap, the Aga Khan University’s Arusha Climate and Environmental Research Centre (AKU-ACER) has partnered with BEEtopia to conduct research on non-Apis pollinators.
On July 31, 2024, thirteen farmers, interns, and staff attended a training session on pollinator-friendly farming techniques. Dr Kathrin Krausa, a visiting entomologist, shared her research findings, emphasizing the significance of pollinators for resilient agricultural systems.
AKU-ACER, through its commitment to addressing global challenges, underscores the importance of preserving pollinators for a sustainable future. By empowering local communities with knowledge and encouraging pollinator-friendly practices, the university is contributing to a healthier ecosystem and food security.
Farmers from AKU-ACER’s neighbouring communities were particularly engaged in the training, expressing a strong desire for additional practical knowledge and opportunities to participate in research activities. The validation of their traditional knowledge about stingless bee honey was met with enthusiasm, demonstrating the potential for combining traditional wisdom with scientific research.
One farmer from Enguritoto Village emphasized the importance of engaging local communities in research projects and providing feedback on the findings. He pledged to become a champion for pollinator conservation.
The training underscored the critical need to protect pollinators and adopt sustainable farming practices. Participants, including AKU staff and interns, emphasized the value of working with nature rather than against it. Individuals and groups can help pollinators by promoting pollinator-friendly habitats and limiting their usage of pesticides.
As human-induced environmental challenges continue to threaten biodiversity, initiatives like the one undertaken by AKU-ACER are crucial for safeguarding the future of our planet. By empowering local communities and promoting research-based solutions, AKU-ACER is leading the way in creating a sustainable and resilient future.
