Recognizing the significant potential for energy savings, CIME embarked on a comprehensive project to replace all fluorescent lights with energy-efficient LED lights throughout their building in Karachi.
Earlier installed fluorescent tube rods typically used around 36 watts, while currently installed LED tube rods use only about 18.5 watts, offering significant energy savings. An 18.5W LED tube has higher lumens-per-watt efficiency compared to 36W fluorescent tubes (e.g. LED tubes have 90 to 130 lumens per watt, whereas fluorescent tubes have 75 to 85 lumens per watt).
Over 600 lights were replaced in CIME during May and June, with careful planning to avoid disrupting daily activities. Switching to LED lighting has greatly reduced the building's energy use, cutting cost and shrinking the carbon footprint of the CIME building. This project goes beyond just saving energy—it's part of Aga Khan University's commitment to environmental sustainability.
The successful completion of the LED lighting installation at CIME showcases the university's dedication to sustainability and sets a benchmark for other institutions to follow in their pursuit of energy efficiency and environmental responsibility.
