In an inspiring ceremony held on Friday, September 6, 2024, Aga Khan University (AKU) welcomed a fresh cohort of aspiring medical and nursing professionals. The White Coat and Pinning Ceremony, a pivotal milestone in these students' academic journeys, marked the commencement of their rigorous training to become compassionate and skilled healthcare providers.
The event unfolded within the grand setting of the AKU campus in Nairobi, where a distinguished assembly of faculty, staff, students, and esteemed guests witnessed the students don their pristine white coats as a symbolic testament to their dedication to the health profession.
"Today marks a transformative transition, a departure from the familiar into the uncharted territory of your professional lives," declared Professor Lukoye Atwoli, Dean of the Medical College of East Africa. "As you embark on this journey, you will take an oath, a sacred covenant that binds you to the noble principles of medicine. This oath is a testament to your dedication, your compassion, and your unwavering commitment to serve humanity."
The medical students took the Hippocratic Oath and the nursing students took a solemn pledge to uphold the ethical tenets of medical practice and to serve their patients with unwavering compassion and integrity. “Wearing the white coat is not just about looking the part, it’s about embodying empathy, compassion, and resilience. It’s about the late nights, the long shifts, the difficult moments when you lose a patient. It will be about you holding a patient’s heart and reminding them that they are not alone,” shared Professor Eunice Ndirangu, Dean, School of Nursing and Midwifery, East Africa.
"It is a privilege and an honor to be part of this prestigious institution and to embark on this transformative journey to become a doctor," expressed Ishmael, one of the incoming nursing students. "I am eager to learn from the experienced faculty and to contribute to the advancement of healthcare in our region."
Chief Guest Dr Simon Kigondu, President and CEO of the Kenya Medical Association emphasized the importance of lifelong learning and professional development. "The medical field is a dynamic and ever-evolving landscape," he stated. "It is imperative to stay abreast of the latest research and advancements in order to provide the highest quality of care to patients."
Dr Lister Onsongo, CEO and Registrar of the Nursing Council of Kenya, highlighted the indispensable role of nurses and midwives in healthcare delivery. "To the Class of 2028 and 2023, congratulations!" she exclaimed. "The white coat and pinning ceremony marks not only the beginning of your professional lives but also a solemn pledge to uphold the values of compassion, integrity, and excellence."
As the students donned their pristine white coats and received their pins, they took a significant step towards realizing their aspirations of becoming healthcare professionals. AKU is steadfast in its commitment to providing them with the necessary education, training, and support to enable them to make a meaningful contribution to the health and well-being of their communities.
