The ‘Bronch-Box’ has been built from scratch by the CIME team of expert technologists and engineers, in partnership with students of the
Salim Habib University (SHU), Karachi, as an advanced bronchoscopy trainer for healthcare practitioners and faculty members.
“Winning at an engineering and electronics exhibition as a healthcare university is a remarkable achievement. The collaboration between CIME and SHU further proves that partnerships between academia and healthcare can drive groundbreaking innovations in Pakistan. With CIME’s expertise in clinical requirements, concept, and VR integration, and SHU’s skills in electronic design, it was wonderful to see both teams leveraging on each other’s strengths to develop the final product,” said Dr Faisal Ismail, Director, AKU-CIME, South Asia.
“This innovative device integrates a physical box with VR technology, offering an immersive experience, allowing users to interact with a 3D model of the human respiratory system, focusing on the trachea and bronchi. The system provides real-time interaction and precise control through sensors and controllers,” explain Saleem Shahabuddin, Manager, Simulation Technology, and Ghalib Ali, Simulation Technical Analyst, at AKU-CIME.
The Bronch-Box comes after the previous success of an intubation box developed by the same team, made to assist anesthesiologists and faculty members in teaching fibroscope maneuvering during intubation of patients.
The 13th edition of the IEEEP Fair took place from September 10-12, 2024 at the Karachi Expo Centre, with over 285 brands and companies participating from Pakistan, China, Poland, Malaysia, Brazil, Germany, and the Netherlands, among others.
The Bronch-Box continues to be placed at AKU-CIME, Karachi as an effective simulation tool for doctors to learn, practice, and enhance their scope of manoeuvring techniques.
