OJ Riaga's journey from a local radio station in Kisumu to the global humanitarian organization Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is a testament to his passion for storytelling and his commitment to making a difference. His career began at Kenya's leading Dholuo FM radio station and the first audio-visual Radio in East and Central Africa, Ramogi FM, where he honed his skills as a journalist, covering a wide range of topics from local politics, sports politics and community events.
During his time at Ramogi FM, OJ developed a deep understanding of the challenges faced by people in rural Kenya. He witnessed firsthand the impact of poverty, disease, and lack of access to healthcare on communities. This experience sparked a desire to use his voice to amplify the stories of those who were often marginalized.
OJ’s career took a significant turn when he joined Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). As a Media Manager, his role involves communicating the organization's work to the public, raising awareness of health crises in Eastern and Central Africa, and using media resources to advocate for access to essential medical care across Africa. His journalistic background has been invaluable in crafting compelling narratives that resonate with stakeholder audiences at MSF such as donors, policy makers and grantmakers.
OJ’s work at Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has taken him to some of the most challenging regions in the world, such as the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan. His work communicates humanitarian crises in conflict-ridden countries, documenting the devastating effects of natural disasters and the climate crisis, and sharing stories of survivors. Through his writing, photography, and video production, OJ’s work brings attention to the urgent needs of vulnerable populations across the African continent.
As OJ continues to work at MSF, he is also pursuing his MA in Strategic Communications at the Aga Khan University’s Graduate School for Media and Communications. This academic endeavour reflects his desire to grow as a strategic media leader leading diverse media projects across Africa and further develop his skills in communicating complex humanitarian messages effectively and with empathy.
