Professor Lukoye Atwoli, Dean, AKU Medical College, East Africa and Associate Director, Brain and Mind Institute has been recognised as the top-ranked researcher in medicine (2021-2023) based on the number of publications according to SciVal Scopus organised by the Kenya Education Network Trust (KENET).
KENET, the National Research and Education Network (NREN) of Kenya is a not-for-profit membership operator incorporated to support research and education institutions.
Speaking while accepting the award, Prof Atwoli said: “It is a great honour to me and to the Aga Khan University family to be recognised as a top ranked researcher in medicine by KENET. This recognition highlights the dedication and commitment to advancing medical research and education both locally and globally.”
KENET provides cost-effective, fast and reliable internet connectivity and related services to enhance education and research. In addition, using ICT, it provides education technology services and research solutions to our member-institutions countrywide.
Other than being Dean of the Medical College at AKU, Prof Atwoli holds visiting and honorary positions at the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health and the University of Cape Town.
In addition, Prof Atwoli leads and participates in mental health research locally and globally. He is a member of the WHO World Mental Health Surveys Consortium, which is the leading collaborative project in psychiatric epidemiology globally.
Last year, Prof Atwoli was elected as an international member to the National Academy of Medicine (NAM). Election to the Academy is considered one of the highest honours in the fields of health and medicine and recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service.
In July this year, Prof Atwoli was elected as one of the International College of Neuropsychopharmacology (CINP) Councillors for a period of four years. The CINP is the global platform for Neuropsychopharmacology, a branch of science that examines the effects of drugs on the mind. It combines neuroscience with the science of psychopharmacology, which studies how different drugs impact people's behaviour.
Prof Atwoli was also appointed by the President of Kenya as the inaugural Chair of the Board for Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital.
