Grace Kerongo, a current member of the web team at Nation Media Group (NMG), never anticipated the profound impact that Aga Khan University's Executive Masters in Media Leadership and Innovation (EMMLI) would have on her career. While she initially entered the programme with a focus on digital journalism, Grace quickly discovered that EMMLI offered much more: a comprehensive approach to leadership, innovation, and sustainability in media.
"I wanted to understand how to innovate in media, and AKU gave me the tools to do that. I learned that innovation isn't just about big changes. Sometimes, it's about small, strategic shifts that build over time," Grace says. Her newfound perspective has shaped her approach to content strategy at NMG, where she plays a pivotal role in adapting digital media offerings to meet the needs of a modern audience.
The hands-on nature of the EMMLI programme was particularly impactful for Grace. "We weren't just learning theory—we were actively working on real-world media projects. I worked on proposals for new podcast formats and even learned about budgeting for media projects," she shares. These experiences have boosted her confidence, allowing her to step into leadership roles in her newsroom.
One of the biggest takeaways for Grace was the exposure to the financial side of media. "Before AKU, I never thought much about the business of media. But now, I can understand financial reports and assess how they influence editorial and strategic decisions," she explains. This understanding has made Grace a more well-rounded professional, capable of making informed decisions that extend beyond content creation.
Reflecting on her time at AKU, Grace says, "I came out of the programme a more confident and capable leader. It's changed the way I look at media, leadership, and innovation." As she prepares for Convocation, Grace is enthusiastic about her future. She plans to continue contributing to NMG but also hopes to venture into media entrepreneurship. "I want to use what I've learned to start new media ventures and be a part of shaping the future of the industry."
Grace's story is a testament to how the right education can unlock new possibilities, and she encourages others to invest in their own growth: "The skills and knowledge you gain at AKU aren't just academic—they're practical and applicable in the real world. And they'll set you apart as a leader in media."
