Erick Katana's journey to the Aga Khan University's Institute for Educational Development, East Africa (AKU-IED, EA) is a testament to the power of resilience and determination. Despite facing numerous challenges, Erick persevered and made the most of his time at AKU-IED.
“As I look back on the hurdles I overcame, I am filled with gratitude for the transformative experience and the profound impact I have made within the AKU community".
In 2022, when a former colleague mentioned AKU-IED's programmes, Erick was immediately intrigued. However, financial constraints posed a significant hurdle. Supporting his two brothers through university on a teacher's salary had already stretched his income to the limit. Even paying the non-refundable application fee seemed out of reach. Yet, the persistent reminders from AKU's registrar office reignited his determination.
With borrowed funds and a steadfast resolve, Erick managed to submit his application. Even then, challenges persisted. He had to navigate workplace hurdles, including securing last-minute permissions to attend interviews. Each step tested his resolve, but giving up was never an option.
Arriving at AKU-IED was a whirlwind of emotions for Erick. The emotional toll was heavy, and there were moments when he doubted his decision. However, the support from the AKU community, particularly the Dean who arranged a counselling session, helped him regain focus.
“A significant turning point came when AKU deferred my fees until after my studies, lifting a tremendous burden and allowing me to concentrate fully on learning and growing."
Once settled, Erick embraced every opportunity to transform and contribute to education. He presented at the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SOTL) conference in Nairobi, participated in the AKU President's Climate Change Challenge, and attended the Foundations for Learning Conference in Uganda.
Outside the classroom, Erick happily connected with fellow students. He organized social outings, including a memorable one-day tour of Bagamoyo's historic sites. These experiences strengthened bonds and created lasting friendships.
"My time at AKU-IED has broadened my perspective and prepared me to be a pragmatic pedagogical leader," Erick shared. “As a classroom teacher, I have already incorporated digital skills and innovative concepts into my school, transforming lessons into edutainment experiences."
Erick's journey at AKU-IED has shaped him into a confident and competent educator, ready to contribute to the evolving landscape of education in East Africa and beyond.
