Dr Janet Onchong'a's journey to becoming an anaesthesiologist is a story of resilience and determination. Pursuing a Master of Medicine at the Aga Khan University Medical College, East Africa (MC, EA) while raising a premature baby presented immense challenges.
"Balancing motherhood and residency was overwhelming at times. I often wondered whether one was suffering for the sake of the other," she says. “Yet, in hindsight, I realize that this duality was also my greatest strength. Being a mother gave me great perspective; being a resident taught me discipline and focus."
Dr Onchong'a faced numerous hurdles. “I had to resign from my county job when I couldn't secure study leave," she shared, a decision that was both painful and uncertain for her. “But AKU supported me with financial aid and a promise that my value as a professional would far outweigh the sacrifices I was making," she recalls.
Despite these challenges, Dr Onchong'a thrived. AKU's rigorous programme, coupled with mentorship from brilliant faculty, fostered her growth. An exchange programme at Kocaeli University Research and Application Hospital in Turkey broadened her horizons.
“I returned with a renewed appreciation for the quality of training at AKU and a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunities it provided. The exposure to diverse clinical challenges and state-of-the-art medical education here at AKU has been unparalleled, that I am now confident knowing I can compete with my colleagues who have studied in international schools."
As she prepares for Convocation, Dr Onchong'a looks back with pride. “Today, as I look back, I am filled with gratitude. AKU has opened doors I never imagined possible. It has shaped me into a resilient professional, a confident teacher, and a global citizen. The challenges I faced taught me perseverance; the opportunities I was given reminded me that hard work never goes unrewarded."
Her success at AKU serves as an inspiration for aspiring healthcare professionals, demonstrating the transformative power of quality education and unwavering resilience.
