The Aga Khan University's Institute for Educational Development, East Africa (IED, EA) celebrated the International Day of Mathematics at its Dar es Salaam campus, aiming to debunk misperceptions about the subject. Under the theme "Mathematics, Art, and Creativity" the event, in collaboration with Young Engineers, advocated for accessible and engaging mathematics education, emphasizing the importance of a positive pedagogical attitude.
Over 129 participants, including educators and students from various institutions, attended the day filled with interactive activities. A presentation on the history of Pi, marking March 14 as the International Day of Mathematics, opened the event. Young Engineers facilitated hands-on workshops, and an exhibition showcased the artistic dimensions of mathematics, highlighting the connection between mathematical concepts and creative expression.
"In Tanzania, the pursuit of quality mathematics education remains a persistent challenge in numerous schools," said Professor Jane Rarieya, Dean of IED, EA. "However, events such as this serve as crucial platforms for disseminating innovative ideas and solutions that render mathematics more engaging for learners. Today's exhibition provided a compelling demonstration of creative strategies to captivate young minds and cultivate a genuine appreciation for mathematics."
The Young Engineers workshop immersed participants in STEM-based activities, using LEGO Master Builders Kits and VEX Robotics kits to build pattern machines and Spirograph machines, coding with Python to generate abstract patterns. These activities demonstrated the practical applications of mathematics.
Dr Lwidiko Mhamilawa, a medical doctor specializing in malaria and infectious diseases, highlighted the role of mathematics in healthcare, simulating the spread of an epidemic through a hand-squeeze activity, demonstrating exponential growth. Professor Afraaz Adam Mulji explored the connection between mathematics and music, using a tabla to demonstrate the mathematical foundations of rhythm and melody.
Diego Barry, a student at IED, EA, reflected on the significance of Pi Day, stating that it transcends mere numerical value, celebrating the inherent beauty and elegance of mathematics. He noted how the event illuminated the intricate patterns that govern the world around us.
The event also provided networking opportunities, and Dr Howard Omukami, faculty at IED, EA emphasized the institution's commitment to fostering a lifelong love of learning. The International Day of Mathematics at IED, EA showcased the multifaceted nature of mathematics, demonstrating its accessibility and potential through interactive exhibits and workshops.
