The School of Nursing and Midwifery’s (SONAM) Class of ’91 in Pakistan has pledged to donate a generous gift of US$ 152,000 that will enable more students to pursue an undergraduate education in nursing.
“I cannot imagine another Institution that could have given me the opportunities that SONAM did,” said Shirin Chunara on behalf of SONAM’s 1991 graduating class. Shirin, like many other nursing students from her class, was also one of the scholarship recipients and was able to create a wholesome education experience for herself without worrying about the finances to support her studies. She added: “We feel blessed to be able to give back to our alma mater and to know that it will empower more students to feel the same way and enjoy the same privileges we did.”
Speaking during the virtual signing ceremony held between SONAM Dean Dr Rozina Karmaliani and the alumni donors, Khairunnissa Hooda, another alumna from the Class, said that the School had prepared them for the real world, adding that they feel the need to pay it forward. Alumni unanimously asserted that the resources and support provided to them by the School and its faculty helped them to pursue their passion in nursing. They also stated that their time at School taught them how to lead a purposeful life.
Zehra Arab, another graduate from the Class, said: “SONAM introduced me to some extraordinary mentors who challenged me to think critically and it has helped me massively in my career and my journey to entrepreneurship.”
The initiative was spearheaded by Shirin Chunara and Zehra Arab on behalf of their class.
Dr Karmaliani thanked the alumni for their generosity and said that the gift will provide scholarships for promising young healthcare leaders and stand as proof of the AKU family's shared commitment to making a difference in the lives of people.
