As part of INTBAU Ethiopia's online series, Professor Stephane Pradines delivered a talk on "Ethiopian Mosques: The Case of Nora and Islamic Architecture in the Region" on 18 March 2021.
Stephane Pradines, who is an archaeologist and Professor of Islamic Art and Architecture at AKU-ISMC, discussed his research and publication on the archaeological excavations from 2008 at the great mosque of Nora. Located in the Shoa Region, the town of Nora is situated midway between the high plateau and the flood plain of the River Awash and Northern Somalia. The research undertaken later helped to identify a style of mosque called the ‘Adal’ style or the mosque of Bilad al-Barbar, typically characterised by dry-stone masonry bonded together with an earth-based mortar with a very basic mihrab and a staircase minaret.
