Sophia Wanuna is a seasoned communications professional with a diverse 15-year career spanning mainstream media and public service. Her journey from a young, aspiring journalist to a strategic communications leader at Kenya’s Judicial Service Commission (JSC) is a testament to her adaptability and dedication to her craft.
Wanuna's passion for communication began early in her life. She recalls spending her childhood pretending to be a news anchor and winning reading competitions. Her love for storytelling led her to pursue a degree in electronic media at Daystar University, where a serendipitous opportunity launched her career in broadcasting.
"I was walking in town with some friends when someone mentioned that the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) was looking for someone to host a women’s show," she recalls. "I went for the audition, which was very informal – we were filmed as we pretended to present a show.”
After a successful stint at KBC, Wanuna moved on to K24 and KTN, where she honed her skills as a news anchor and reporter. She excelled in covering high-profile events and navigating the fast-paced newsroom environment. However, after years of dedicated service, Wanuna felt the need for a change.
The transition to the JSC marked a significant turning point in her career. "I saw this as the perfect opportunity. The transition was tough, but it felt like it was part of my purpose. I knew I was meant to be here,” she says. As the head of public affairs and corporate communication, Wanuna is responsible for shaping the commission's public image and engaging with stakeholders. Her strong communication skills and strategic thinking have been invaluable in this role.
Despite the challenges of adapting to a new industry, Wanuna has embraced the opportunity to contribute to the public good. She has applied her media experience to develop effective communication strategies and build strong relationships with various stakeholders.
"I think the key to success in this field is to be open to new opportunities," she advises aspiring communicators. "Embrace challenges, take risks, and never stop learning."
Wanuna's career journey is a reminder that with hard work, dedication, and a willingness to embrace change, one can achieve success in various fields.
