Introduction

Chartered in 1983, Aga Khan University (AKU) is a private, autonomous, and self-governing international university, with 13 teaching sites in 6 countries over three continents. The Centre of Excellence in Women and Child Health (CoEWCH) was established in 2012 as a research unit within the obstetrics and gynaecology department of the Aga Khan University (AKU) with Prof Zulfiqar A Bhutta as the Founding Director. In 2015, Prof Marleen Temmerman was welcomed as the East Africa (EA) Director of the Centre to build capacity across East Africa. CoEWCH EA conducts research, knowledge translation, capacity building, and evidence-based advocacy in reproductive, maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health and rights to improve the health and wellbeing of women, children, and adolescents. With a focus on establishing high quality education, multidisciplinary research, and trainings in women, child, and adolescent health, the Centre contributes to health systems strengthening and quality of care, particularly in remote groups and vulnerable populations.

Job Summary

The consultancy entails, Communications support for the Centre and affiliated projects.

Responsibilities

  • Support projects in the development of communication materials:
  • Support the iMAMA project team in finalization of the ongoing documentary production, including conceptualization and coordination with production teams.
  • Assist in the procurement of the iMAMA visibility materials.
  • Design and develop communication materials for the PRETERM Africa study, ensuring alignment with project goals and target audience needs.
  • Provide strategic advice on engagement opportunities, activities, and messaging for the key global health days relevant to the Centre (International HPV Awareness Day, International Women’s Day, World Maternal Mental Health Day, World Ovarian Cancer Day, International Day of Action for Women’s Health)
  • Collaborate with the AKU Office of Strategic Communications to ensure integration in messaging and tactics and to leverage synergies.
  • Support media relations and event communications, including drafting press releases, coordinating media coverage, and ensuring effective event communication strategies. 
  • Maintain and regularly update the Centre’s webpage on the AKU website, ensuring accuracy and relevance. 
  • Manage the Centre’s X (formerly Twitter) account and support the development of a LinkedIn presence to enhance visibility and engagement. 
  • Provide broad-based and project-specific communications advice to project teams:
  • Provide communications guidance to project teams by helping them craft key messages, enhance storytelling, and leverage communication opportunities.
  • Offer project-specific communications support to ensure clarity, consistency, and impact in outreach efforts.
  • Support any other communication needs for the Centre e.g. the quarterly newsletter.
  • Attend the monthly communicators forum on behalf of the department

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications
  • Ability to develop and execute communications strategies tailored to diverse audiences. 
  • Demonstrated experience in multimedia storytelling.
  • Strong skills in content creation, social media management, and website maintenance.
  • Proficiency in graphic design.
  • Strong writing and editing skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across teams and coordinate multiple projects.
  • Proactive, innovative, and adaptable to dynamic environments.
