Introduction

The Centre of Excellence in Women and Child Health (CoEWCH) was established in 2012 as a research unit within the obstetrics and gynaecology department of the Aga Khan University (AKU) with Prof Zulfiqar A Bhutta as the Founding Director. In 2015, Prof Marleen Temmerman was welcomed as the East Africa (EA) Director of the Centre to build capacity across East Africa. CoEWCH EA conducts research, knowledge translation, capacity building, and evidence-based advocacy in reproductive, maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health and rights to improve the health and wellbeing of women, children, and adolescents. With a focus on establishing high quality education, multidisciplinary research, and trainings in women, child, and adolescent health, the Centre contributes to health systems strengthening and quality of care, particularly in remote groups and vulnerable populations.

Job Summary

The purpose of this assignment is to conduct interviews (IDIs, FGDs, & KIIs), transcribe and translate transcripts verbatim in the English language for the AIMIX project. The AIMIX project (Inclusive Artificial Intelligence for Obstetric Imaging in Resource Limited Settings) has a qualitative component that involves collection and analysis of qualitative data to ensure that the development and implementation of imaging AI technologies align with local ethical values and social contexts as one of its objectives.  

The position is based at the study research sites – Rabai subcounty in Kilifi and Nairobi  

Responsibilities

  • Data Collection
  • Approach and recruit study participants in an efficient, ethical, and timely manner. 
  • Prepare a clean, private space to conduct interviews/ discussions.
  • Conduct interviews/discussions in adherence to study procedures and specific training. 
  • Follow up with the study coordinator with any questions or lingering issues from the interviews/discussions.
  • Ensure quality control for the data collection.
  • Compilation of comprehensive debriefing notes.
  • Perform any other duties assigned. 
  • Safely store audio files. 
  • Safeguard study equipment

Transcription

  • In addition to the above, transcribe and translate transcripts verbatim in the English language.
  • Review transcribed transcripts to ensure accuracy and quality.
  • Present the transcripts neatly typed in the format provided by the research team.
  • Upon review of your work by the research team, you will be required to make any necessary corrections and edits to the satisfaction of the team.
  • Ensure timely submission of transcripts.
  • Submit clean and quality transcripts timely within pre-specified timelines agreed with the study coordinator. 

Requirements

  • A minimum of 3 years previous experience in qualitative research methods, specifically conducting high level in-depth interviews, Key informant interviews, and focus group discussions and experience in probing for clearer answers.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in transcription.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Self-driven and motivated
  • Fluency in English and Swahili (both spoken and written).
  • Knowledge of ethical guidelines and protocols for research involving human participants.

Expectations

  • Work closely with the study coordinator who will be available to guide your work.
  • Attend all planned training for the study team as required by the study coordinator.
  • Participate in regular team meetings to discuss progress and address any challenges.
  • Undertake to perform the contractual engagement with the highest standards of professional and ethical competence and integrity.
  • Submit quality work. 
  • You will be expected to maintain strict confidentiality of the study material/ documents provided for the purposes of this task.
  • You will, at all times, during the period of your contract safeguard the reputation of Aga Khan University.
  • Your payment will be subject to Withholding Tax deduction as per Kenyan Law.
  • You will be expected to provide AKU-EA finance office with your PIN, bank details to facilitate your payment.
  • Your payment will be subject to provision of signed schedule /invoice to the AKU-EA finance office confirming interviews/transcriptions done in line with the project goals.
