The Brain and Mind Institute (BMI) is a newly minted entity at the Aga Khan University (AKU), with key hubs in Nairobi (for East Africa) and Karachi (for South and Central Asia). The BMI seeks to build capacity in the domains of mental health and neuroscience. In collaboration with partners, the Institute is advancing research leadership capacity and support service delivery across East Africa and South Asia, and other regions served by the AKU. The Institute supports a hub for scholarship exchange and action on mental health issues, as well as educational, clinical, and community-based programs. BMI’s research focuses on the context of today’s youth in Africa and South Asia, while our programmatic offerings address mental health related and brain health issues, including stigma and resiliency. A significant area of interest is the implementation of science-based programming in hospital and community settings that translate new discoveries into prevention and treatment programs.

This is a contractual position.

Responsibilities

You will be responsible to:
  • screen and refer patients for depression and cognitive impairment
  • conduct neurological testing and structured psychiatric/mental health evaluations
  • provide counseling to patients upon diagnosis
  • refer participants to appropriate services based on needs and diagnoses
  • collect data for diagnoses made
  • ensure confidentiality of all collected data and diagnoses
  • properly document all finding and diagnoses.

Requirements

You should have:
  • MBBS with FCPS part 1. However, candidates with FCPS part 2 will be preferred
  • at least one to two years of relevant experience in psychiatry
  • knowledge of research processes and ethical consideration
  • proficiency in diagnosing psychiatric and neurological conditions
  • competent approach and conscientious with a sensitive and empathetic attitude towards study participants
  • attention to detail
  • good interpersonal skills and comfort in discussing difficult topics with participants and their family members
  • knowledge of good clinical practice guidelines
  • ability to provide written and oral instructions/information to patients and family members in colloquial English and Urdu.
