Shagufta Hassan
Interim Chief Executive Officer, Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi
Ms. Shagufta Hassan is an internationally acclaimed leader in healthcare management and operations. A Fellow Member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Pakistan and a graduate of University of Navarra, Spain, where she completed the Advanced Management Program, Ms. Hassan now serves the Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH), Pakistan as the Interim Chief Executive Officer for its Health Services operations in Pakistan.
Ms. Hassan began her journey with the Aga Khan University (AKU) in 2003, as Manager, Grants and Contracts and soon enough, with her passion, enthusiasm and dedication, she took leadership roles in Finance where she then served as a Director. During these years, Ms. Hassan efficiently managed operations, and developed and implemented business plans and strategies. Her experience includes and is not limited to managing financial planning and complex operations which also includes conducting risk assessments.
Prior to AKU, Ms. Hassan has worked at leading organizations, including A. F. Ferguson & Co. (PricewaterhouseCoopers), where she has managed large and complex audits including forensic audits.
In her recent role as the Chief Operating Officer, Clinical Laboratories and Outreach Services of AKUH, Ms. Hassan has worked diligently on developing and implementing strategy to revitalize growth of over 280 Clinical Laboratories in more than 128 cities, more than 25 Medical Centers, Pharmacies and Home Healthcare Services ensuring quality standards, identifying business opportunities, and meeting institutional goals and targets. Under her leadership, the Clinical Laboratories have been recognized for their high quality and for fast and accurate testing by being accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP), the international gold standard in laboratory testing, making it the first in Pakistan to have achieved this. With her commitment to public health and improving healthcare outcomes around Pakistan, under her leadership, Outreach Services has partnered with Government of Sindh towards eradication of Hepatitis C. An MOU with the Government of Sindh was also signed to carry out Government's immunization program from the Aga Khan University Hospital's phlebotomy centres in the province of Sindh.
Her contribution and work has been recognized through several national and international awards which include: 100 Most Impactful Healthcare Leaders Award, World Health and Wellness Congress (2019); Top 100 Best Performing CEO's by the CEO Club Pakistan (2017); the Women's Achievement Award (2017) by the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Pakistan; and the Pond's Miracle Woman Award (2017).
Since 2015, Ms. Hassan has served as a trustee of the Aga Khan Ismailia Charitable Trust. She is a committed Board Member of the Aga Khan Health Services, Pakistan and a member of the AKDN CEO Forum. A champion of women's rights, she led the Women's Development Portfolio for the Aga Khan Regional Council for Karachi and Balochistan. Since 2015, Hassan continues her service as Honorary Lecturer for the Masters in Health Policy and Management Program at the Aga Khan University.
