Dr Abbas completed his Fellowship from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan in 1992, FRCS from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1993, FRCS from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in 1993, Fellowship in Urology from the European Board of Urology in 2002, and Fellowship of American College of Surgeons in 2006. 

He has served in a number of leadership positions at the University including Associate Dean for Postgraduate Medical Education, Medical Director and Associate Dean, Clinical Affairs, Chief Operating Officer, AKUH,K and ​finally as Dean, Medical College, Pakistan, since 2010. While serving in these key positions, he has made significant contributions in health sciences education, service, research and administration. 

Dr Abbas has also served on a number of international and national forums; he has served as faculty and member of the International Executive Committee of Asian School of Urology, Asian Society of Uro-Oncology, WHO steering committee on Prostate and Bladder Cancer, to name just a few. He is one of the founding members of the Pakistan Association of Urological Surgeons, served on the Boards of Governors of the Karachi Kidney Centre, Karachi American College, was an elected member of the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council and is a Fellow of the Pakistan Academy of Sciences and the Pakistan Academy of Medical Sciences. 

Dr Abbas is a recipient of many awards and recognition that include the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz (medal of excellence) and Sitara-e-Imtiaz (Star of Excellence) for his achievements in the field of Medicine in 2010 and 2016, respectively. He also received international recognition when the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, UK awarded him the G.B. Ong Gold Medal in 1993, as the only Pakistani and the second Asian ever to receive this distinction. ​​
