Gitonga M'Mbijjewe
Interim Associate Vice Provost and Academic Administration. Kenya
Gitonga M’Mbijjewe is a professional academic administrator with over twenty-five years of experience in various levels of administration, both within Kenya and the United States. During this time, he has served in various dockets, including but not limited to corporate affairs and public relations, strategy, university advancement, human resources, institutional and programme accreditation, governance, student affairs, curriculum development, human resources, training, a researcher, and a faculty member.
Gitonga is currently the Interim Associate Vice Provost and Academic Administration at the Aga Khan University-Kenya (AKU). During his time in AKU, he has served as the Director of Administrative Services, Director Strategic Initiatives, Graduate School of Media and Communications and as the Director, Digital Scholarship Centre. In addition to his responsibilities, serves as a Master of Ceremonies at AKU. Before joining AKU he was the Campus Director, Edulink International College, Kenya, founding Dean of Students, Kenya Methodist University, Nairobi Campus, and later as founding Director of the Office of Corporate Affairs within the same university. He has also worked in the not-for-profit sector as a partnerships lead.
A lifelong learner, he has an educational background in Agronomy, Soil Science and Counseling and is currently pursuing a PhD in the Institute of Climate Change and Adaptation at the University of Nairobi, with a focus on remote sensing, blockchain and conservation. Gitonga also completed the “Transforming Leadership for 21st Century Africa” programme delivered by the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in collaboration with The Aga Khan University, Graduate School of Media and Communications (GSMC), and has pursued courses in instructional design for e-learning, facilitation of online courses, and emotional intelligence, amongst others.
He has served as a board member of Friends of Nairobi National Park, is a board member of the Radio Society of Kenya (Amateur/Ham radio). Most recently as Board Chair of Ripples International, a child and human rights non-profit organization, and is an active member of Smart Speak Toastmaster Club, Toastmasters International.
Mr. M’Mbijjewe is also a farmer, an avid volunteer, a champion of the environment, a follower and practitioner of emerging technologies, and a certified coach in Emotional Intelligence. Close to his heart is mentorship, physical, spiritual and mental wellbeing, and the power of teamwork. Gitonga strongly believes that where challenges lie, so do opportunities.
