Message from the President

At the Aga Khan University, diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging are integral to our identity  and our goals as an institution. Our mission commits us to making high-quality education and health care accessible to individuals of all backgrounds, and to collaborating across borders and boundaries to increase understanding, create knowledge and develop solutions to common problems. That is the case because we believe that every human being is linked to every other human being by their shared humanity, that everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect and that we all have much to learn from people whose experiences and traditions are different from our own.

AKU is committed to building a community where every individual feels valued, empowered and included. Whether by creating accessible learning environments, ensuring representation in leadership or enabling a wide range of voices and perspectives to be heard, we strive to embrace humanity’s diversity.

Our work in the area of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging reflects the values of pluralism and compassion that guide our institution. AKU is meant to be a place where everyone, regardless of their identity, has the opportunity to thrive and contribute meaningfully to society. As His Highness the Aga Khan has said, “Diversity is not a reason to put up walls, but rather to open windows.”

I look forward to opening many windows and many minds together with our faculty, staff, students, alumni, supporters and friends.

Dr Sulaiman Shahabuddin
President, Aga Khan University
