Shaping the Future: Introducing Advanced Practice Nursing in Pakistan and East Africa

Celebrating 40 years of School of Nursing and Midwifery in Pakistan and 20 years in East Africa

AKU's School of Nursing and Midwifery has always led the way in introducing new academic programmes and improving nursing and midwifery education, research and practice. This pioneering role has continued over the years, and now the School aspires to be the first nursing school in Pakistan and East Africa to build public-private partnerships in order to introduce the role of Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs) in the two regions.

In the past couple of decades, there has been a global trend where nursing schools are preparing MScN students to take on APN roles. These nursing students are skilled in complex decision making and have a range of advanced clinical competencies that prove vital in improving healthcare Access to remote areas, ensure Quality to achieve service excellence that is contextually Relevant to the communities they serve thereby, making a local, regional and global Impact.

APNs are holistically prepared to contribute to the social and economic development of the country and in turn, help governments to achieve sustainable development goals.

Event Details

The event is stretched over two days: The first day will be an online convention of nursing stakeholders, including policymakers, national and international leadership, directors and deans of nursing schools, nurses across Pakistan and East Africa and AKU-SONAM’s global alumni to discuss the way forward to launch APN in the two regions. On the second day, our APN experts will be holding multiple online workshops focusing on a variety of clinical competencies.

Event Objectives

This two-day online event aims to:

Create awareness about the APN role in the public and private healthcare institutions.
Facilitate and introduce the APN role at the University Hospital by engaging the School's alumni working as APNs globally to provide technical expertise and share knowledge.
Collaborate with local, regional and international nursing bodies.
Partner with the nursing councils and regulatory bodies from the two regions, and members of the Nursing and Midwifery Leaders' Forum to establish this role and ensure its viability.
Provide a forum for the exchange of expertise, experience and knowledge in developing the role.

This online event is open to all nursing and midwifery students, educators, practising nurses and midwives, leaders in the field and other healthcare professionals.
