Dr Sayed Karar Ali, MD, FACP
Professor & Vice Chair, Section Head-Palliative Care
Dr Sayed Karar Ali is a Professor and Section Head, Palliative Care/Internal Medicine at Aga Khan University Medical College, East Africa. Dr Sayed trained in the United States of America completing his undergraduate studies at Stony Brook University in Long Island, New York with a summa cum laude in 1999. He got accepted into an early acceptance medical school program at Stony Brook School of Medicine, New York, where he completed his medical degree in 2003. A recipient of the United States Army Health Professions Scholarship, he completed training in internal medicine at North Shore University Hospital in 2006. In 2017, he received certification as a hypertension clinician from the American Hypertension Society.
He is currently dual boarded by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) in both internal medicine and hospice and palliative care medicine. He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the Royal College of Physicians. Dr Sayed is a recipient of many teaching awards including the Osler’s Teaching Award from the University of Central Florida in 2016 and 2017.
He has multiple scholarly publication in various peer reviewed journals and has co-authored many abstracts presented both locally and internationally. He is heavily involved in Graduate Medical Education, teaching both residents in students as well as assisting with research projects, abstracts and peer review publications. His special interests lie in the role of various arts in medicine and the healing process.

Dr Rajiv Patel Senior Instructor & Program Director
Dr Rajiv Patel is the current Program Director for the Department of Medicine at the Aga Khan University Medical College, East Africa. He obtained his undergraduate degree from the AIMST University, Malaysia. He completed his Master’s (MMED) in Internal Medicine from the Aga Khan University in 2018. During his residency, he was the chief resident and received multiple awards including the best resident of the year award. After successful completion of his residency, he worked at the Aga Khan Hospital, Mombasa both in the inpatient and outpatient settings. He also served as the Deputy Head of the Department of Medicine, internship coordinator and Chair of the Hospital Ethics committee.
Dr Rajiv is an integral part of the Internal Medicine team, with active involvement of patient care and education in both the inpatient and clinic. He also plays an active role in mentoring and tutoring the residents and medical students that rotate within medicine. His main interest lies in graduate medical education and fostering innovative ways of improving delivery of healthcare to Kenyans.

Dr Soraiya Manji
Senior Instructor
Dr Soraiya Manji obtained her medical degree, Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) from Moi University in the year 2015. Thereafter, she completed her Masters in Internal Medicine (MMed) from Aga Khan University in 2020.
During this period she served as the chief resident. After completing her Masters, she worked for two years as a physician, more recently as the resident physician in Avenue Hospital in Thika. Being the only resident physician there with minimal sub-specialty support, she was heavily involved in in-patient and outpatient care, with focus on holistic care of patients, in addition to providing continuous medical education support to medical officers and nurses. She was involved in their medical advisory committee and in setting up an Antimicrobial Stewardship committee for the first time in the hospital.
Dr Soraiya’s interests are in geriatric medicine, focusing on quality of life of the elderly, preventive medicine, non-communicable diseases, nephrology and medical education. She is also interested in research, with five publications so far and several presentations done at international and local conferences. She is a member of the Kenya Association of Physicians (KAP) and East, Central and Southern Africa College of Physicians (ECSACOP).
She is currently involved in in-patient and outpatient care in the hospital and outreach centers and in teaching and mentoring residents of post-graduate medical education programme.
