Message from the Programme Director
Welcome to the Department of Family Medicine at Aga Khan University, Tanzania!
Family Medicine is an exciting and essential specialty in Tanzania, focused on providing holistic, patient-centered care that addresses the bio-psycho-social aspects of health. As an integral part of the healthcare system, Family Medicine plays a key role in delivering comprehensive and accessible care across communities.
Our mission is to train compassionate, highly skilled Family Physicians who are ready to provide high-quality care in diverse settings. We aim to develop leaders who are equipped to tackle the healthcare challenges of the 21st century, working collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams to improve health outcomes.
The Family Medicine residency program at AKU offers a dynamic and well-rounded curriculum that prepares physicians for practice in both urban and semi-urban settings. Through a balanced focus on medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, emergency care, behavioral health, and surgical skills, you will gain a comprehensive skill set to thrive in the field.
Over the four-year training, you will progressively take on greater responsibilities in patient care, manage your own continuous education, and participate in outreach health initiatives across Dar es Salaam. Our competency-based training model emphasizes hands-on learning, case-based discussions, peer learning, and critical thinking, ensuring that you acquire knowledge that is contextual and evidence-based.
We are committed to helping you build a fulfilling and sustainable career in Family Medicine. Our program is designed to foster long-term satisfaction and personal growth in the field, ensuring that you are well-prepared to navigate the complexities of modern healthcare.
We hope this information sparks your interest and encourages you to explore how you can be part of our transformative program. We look forward to the opportunity to learn and grow together!
