Our faculty are trained and accredited in some of the finest institutions in Europe but have developed a keen understanding of the conditions faced in East Africa and can approach Pulmonology problems in the relevant context for our patients.

Dr Jumaa Bwika MBChB (UoN), MRCP (UK), MRCP Respiratory Medicine (UK) CCT (UK)
Clinical Assistant Professor & Section Head, Pulmonology
Dr Jumaa Bwika is a Clinical Assistant Professor and Section Head, Aga Khan University Medical College, East Africa. He earned his medical degree at University of Nairobi in 1998, and his MRCP from the Royal College of Physician, London in 2009. He later pursued specialty training in General Internal Medicine (GIM) and in Respiratory medicine achieving specialist certification in Respiratory medicine from the Federation of the Royal Colleges of Physicians, and the British Thoracic Society in 2013. He completed his consultant training in 2014, attaining his Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) from the General Medical Council, with dual accreditation in the Respiratory and the GIM specialist registers, and Specialist Collegiate Membership in Respiratory Medicine.
Dr Bwika is pursuing a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Birmingham, and is currently working on a thesis in New Service Development. Prior to moving to Kenya, Dr Bwika served as a locum Consultant in Respiratory and Acute medicine at the University Hospital of North Midlands, Stoke-on Trent for three years. Dr Bwika has multiple peer-reviewed publications and has presented at various conferences and meetings.
His skills include flexible bronchoscopy, non-invasive ventilation, thoracic ultrasonography for pleural procedures, medical thoracoscopy, cardio-pulmonary exercise testing and endobronchial ultrasound. His interests include clinical management pathways, new service design, service delivery and service recovery. He is an active member of the British Thoracic Society and the European Respiratory Society.

Dr Salim Hassanali B.Sc, MB.BS, MMed
Clinical Senior Instructor
Dr Hassanali undertook his initial undergraduate education at Bhopal Nobles College, Udaipur, Rajastan, India where he received his BSc in 1985 before proceeding to Sri Ramchandra Bhanj Medical College, India (Utkal University] where he graduated with MBBS in1990. He earned his MMed in internal medicine at the University of Nairobi in 2007 and later proceeded for his Fellowship Training in Pulmonology/Critical Care at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital at the University of Witwatersrand. He joined the Aga Khan Hospital – Mombasa as a medical Officer in 2004, before being appointed ICU/HDU Registrar Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi in 2011.
Dr Hassanali has specialized training in upper endoscopies, sigmoidoscopies, flexible bronchoscopies and ultrasound procedures. He has completed courses in basic and advanced immunology. Dr Hassanali’s research interest include pathophysiology and treatment of ARDS and bronchiectasis. He is an active member of Kenya Association of Physicians, Society of Critical Care Medicine, Kenya Medical Association, South African Thoracic Society, Critical Care Society of South Africa and American Thoracic Society.
