Dr Elkanah Omenge E. Orang'o, MBChB, MMED (OB/GYN), Ph.D.​
Associate Professor & Chair

Dr Elkanah Omenge Orang’o is the Chair, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Aga Khan University Medical College, East Africa. Dr Omenge previously worked at Moi University School of Medicine, Eldoret in the capacity of Chair, Department of Reproductive Health. 

His clinical function is Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynecology, with a sub-specialization in Gynecological Oncology. Dr Omenge serves as a reviewer and sits in several editorial boards of leading Clinical Journals, and he is also an external examiner in various medical schools in Kenya. 

Prior to joining Moi University, Dr. Omenge worked at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital as a Consultant Obstetrician-Gynecologist. He completed his residency at the University of Nairobi and his fellowship in Gynecological Oncology jointly at Moi University, Eldoret and University of Toronto, Canada. 

Dr Omenge undertook his PhD in Medical Sciences at the University of Antwerp, Belgium. He has over 80 research publications and has attracted numerous grants in both research and training. He has supervised students at Masters, Clinical Fellowship and PhD levels.

He brings significant experience in leadership, clinical service, teaching and research. Dr. Omenge was recognized at AKU as one of the authors with over 50 publications, and additional recognitions include winning the Kenya Obstetrical & Gynecological Society Presidential award for research in HPV and Cervical Cancer, and in his leadership in Gynecological Oncology. He is a respected leader globally in this field.

Dr Mukaindo Mwaniki, MBChB, MMed (OB/GYN)  
Assistant Professor   

Dr Mukaindo Mwaniki is an Assistant Professor, Department of Obstetrician and Gynaecology with over 14 years’ of experience in maternal and child health. Recently, he has broadened his interest from clinical obstetrics and gynecology to health systems and their impact on maternal and child health. His particular interest is improvement of the quality of care offered at delivery. He is currently involved in the AQCESS/MERL research project, examining the value of clinical mentorship for midwives in improving quality of delivery care in rural Coastal and Western Kenya. ​​

Dr Mukaindo has worked in both the private and public sectors in Kenya as well as in international research collaborations. He holds a Bachelors of Medicine and Surgery degree and a Masters of Medicine in Obstetrics and gynecology.

He has published widely in peer-reviewed journals and supervised over ten Masters of Medicine dissertations. He is the former vice-chair of the Kenya Obstetrical and Gynecological Society (KOGS).

Prof Marleen Temmerman is the Director of the Center of Excellence in Women and Child Health, Aga Khan University, East Africa. She is a well-recognized global leader in women, child & adolescent health. She brings academic, technical, political, governance, management and leadership skills to the table as well as diplomacy, advocacy, fundraising, training and clinical expertise.

Before joining AKU in 2015, she was Director of the Department of Reproductive Health and Research (RHR) at the World Health Organization (Geneva, Switzerland). She is Professor emeritus at the Ghent University in Belgium, and the Founding Director of the International Centre of Reproductive Health (ICRH) at Ghent University with sister research organizations in Kenya and Mozambique, and a large global collaborative academic network of 27 Universities globally. She has a strong academic and scientific background with over 500 publications and books in the area of women’s health, with a Hirsch index of 7. She has supervised many PhD students in Europe, Africa, Latin-America and China and received several awards and honours for her research and advocacy work. 

She is one of the penholders of the UN Global Strategy for Women's, Children and Adolescents' Health 2016-2030, led by UNSG Ban Ki Moon. She is a Senior Fellow in the Institute for Global Health Diplomacy in Geneva. She is the AKU lead of several women and child health programmes in East-Africa such as the Canadian funded AQCESS (Access to Quality Care through Extending and Strengthening Health Systems) and IMPACT programmes, the PRECISE research platform (UK-MRC) and several smaller research and capacity building programmes. She is the AKU-UNESCO Chair holder on Youth Leadership in Science, Health, Gender and Education. She is also the Chair of the Pumwani Maternity Hospital Board.

Dr Patricia Muthaura, MD FACOG​  
Assistant Professor​  

Dr Patricia Muthaura is a consultant obstetrician gynaecologist. She is a graduate of Howard University, College of Medicine, Washington DC, USA. She completed her residency training at the University of Pennsylvania University Health system in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA in 2004.  After completion of training, she worked in the United States as an Obstetrician Gynaecologist for 5 years before returning to Kenya in 2009.

She is the current Program Director for the Postgraduate Masters in Medicine Degree Program in Obstetrics and Gynaecology where she is involved in the training and supervision of postgraduate students. Dr Muthaura holds a postgraduate diploma in Medical Education from Cardiff University, UK. She was the module coordinator for the design of the undergraduate curriculum on the Urogenital system.

Dr Muthaura was the Section head for Gynaecology at Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi from 2016 to June 2019. Dr Muthaura is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.  She is a member of the Kenya Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. Her primary passion is clinical work and taking care of patients.  She runs both antenatal and gynaecology clinics at the hospital. She initiated and implemented the cervical cancer screening program at AKUH, N, the first organized cancer screening program at Aga Khan University Hospital Nairobi.  She conducts a colposcopy clinic and performs laparoscopic, hysteroscopic as well as open surgeries.

Dr Timona Obura, MBChB, MMed (OB/GYN)
Assistant Professor 

Dr Timona Obura is an Assistant Professor, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Aga Khan University, Medical College and is a Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist, with advanced skills in Hysteroscopic & Laparoscopic Gynaecological Surgery. Previously, he served as Director of Postgraduate Medical Education from 2010 to 2013 and was the inaugural Program Director, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology from 2005 to 2010 at the Aga Khan University in East Africa. Has also served as interim chair of the department from 2013 to 2015 and as Vice Chair, Clinical from 2016 to 2018.

Dr Obura has a Diploma in Advanced Gynaecological Endoscopy, University of Surrey (UK), attained in 2009, Master of Medicine in Obstetrics and Gynaecology attained in 2003 at the University of Nairobi, and Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery attained in 1994 at the University of Nairobi.

Assistant Professor

Dr Musana holds a bachelor of medicine and surgery as well as a Masters of medicine in obstetrics and gynecology from the University of Nairobi. He holds an advanced diploma in sexual and reproductive health and rights from Lund University in Sweden. He further holds an advanced training certificate in clinical research from The University of California San Francisco (UCSF) through the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics.

He recently completed a non-accredited 3-year fellowship program in Preterm Birth as part of The Preterm Birth Initiative, a multi-national multi-year translational and implementation research program administered by The University of California San Francisco whose aim is to reduce the global burden of preterm birth. During his fellowship program, Dr Musana launched a research project in Migori County in Kenya whose main objective is to examine and characterize prenatal stress among vulnerable populations of pregnant women using self-report measures of stress and correlating these measures with hair cortisol, an innovative biological marker of stress, in order to predict gestational length hence preterm birth. 

His research interest is in Reproductive Health specifically mental health, non-communicable diseases, perinatal HIV and neonatal, infant and child outcomes especially preterm birth. His current areas of teaching and clinical expertise include management of complex pregnancies including non-communicable diseases in pregnancy, labor ward skills, and contraception. He is an assistant professor in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at the Aga Khan University, Nairobi, Kenya.

Dr Sikolia Wanyonyi, MBChB, MMed, MRCOG, MMFM
Assistant Professor  

Dr Sikolia Wanyonyi is an assistant Professor and Consultant in Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Fetal Medicine. He holds a Master of Medicine in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, membership of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (MRCOG) of the United Kingdom, an international Master in Maternal and Fetal Medicine from the University of Barcelona and a Diploma in Fetal Medicine from Fetal Medicine- Barcelona

Dr Sikolia undertook a two-and-half year clinical research fellowship in fetal medicine at the University of Oxford Hospitals prior to re-joining the Aga Khan University Hospital in 2014 where he has been keen on introducing fetal medicine services in the region.

He has published over 45 peer-reviewed articles and several books chapters. He is a member of the International Society for Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (ISUOG), the Fetal Medicine Foundation (FMF) and the Kenya Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society (KOGS).

Dr Khadija Warfa, ​MBChB, MMed (OB/GYN)   
Clinical Assistant Professor

Dr Warfa is Consultant Obstetrician Gynecologist and a Gynecologic Oncologist. She completed a four-year residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Aga Khan University in 2012. On completion, she worked as a clinical instructor in the department for a year and proceeded to the University of Calgary, Canada for a two-year fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology. She is involved in the training and supervision of postgraduate students, she runs various clinics at the hospital with a wide referral base from East and Central Africa. 

Dr Warfa is also involved in creating awareness in women’s cancer; she gives talks in various institutions voluntarily to educate women about cervical cancer screening, her objective is to reduce mortality related to Gynecologic Cancers in Kenya. She is a member of the European society of gynecologic oncology (ESGO) and a member of the Kenya society of obstetricians and gynaecologists (KOGS).

Dr Charles Muteshi, MBChB, MMed (OB/GYN)
Assistant Professor

Dr Muteshi completed his training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology from Aga Khan University (2011). He was then awarded and completed a two year Clinical Research Fellowship at Oxford Fertility, Institute of Reproductive Sciences and the Nuffield Department of Obstetrics a nd Gynaecology, University of Oxford with an interest in endometriosis and in vitro fertilisation (IVF/ICSI). 

In the summer of 2015 Dr Muteshi became a Fertility Specialist with Oxford Fertility and an honorary fellow of the University of Oxford. In addition to endometriosis he developed interest in infertility preservation for cancer patients and recurrent implantation failure following IVF treatment. Dr Muteshi joined Aga Khan University in the autumn of 2018 where he is involved in research & teaching and management of couples seeking fertility. Dr Muteshi is also an active member of local and international societies.

Assistant Professor and Programme Director

​Dr Felix Oindi is a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist and Programme Director, Aga Khan Medical College, East Africa. He completed a four-year residency in obstetrics and gynaecology at the Aga Khan University. 

He holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBCh.B) degree from the University of Nairobi. Prior to completion of his undergraduate medical course, he was enrolled for a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Medical Physiology at the University of Nairobi, a one year intercalated degree program offered to a few excellent medical students after the completion of pre-clinical years.

He currently serves as a senior instructor in the department whereby he is actively involved in the training and supervision of postgraduate students. He also runs various outpatient gynaecology and obstetrics clinics alongside offering inpatient care as needed. He is actively involved in research and has published in various peer review journals alongside making presentations in both local and international scientific conferences.

He is a member of various professional bodies including the Kenya Obstetrics and Gynaecological Society (KOGS) and Kenya Society of Endoscopic Specialties (KESES). In addition, he is a certified Instructor in the Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) programme. He has a keen interest in gynaecologic endoscopy (Laparoscopy and Hysteroscopy) and benign gynaecologic conditions like uterine fibroids, endometriosis and Female sexual dysfunction.

Dr Steve Mutiso, BSc. (Medical Physiology), MBChB, M.Med (OB/GYN); Cert. MIGS (Minimally Invasive Gynaecological Surgery)
Assistant Professor

Dr Mutiso is a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at the Department. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Nairobi. He also has a Bachelors in Science in Medical Physiology (Hons.) from the University - a reserve for top performers. He earned his master’s degree in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Aga Khan University, Nairobi and has a postgraduate certificate in Minimally Invasive Gynaecological surgery from the European Society of Gynaecological Endoscopy (ESGE).

He currently serves as an assistant professor at the department, a role that involves running of clinical services in reproductive health and training of residents. Moreover, he is a certified faculty in the Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) course and serves in the editorial and review boards of several peer reviewed research journals. He has a keen interest in minimal invasive gynaecological surgery (laparascopy) and research. He has several publications with his research interests being benign gynecological conditions like endometriosis and fibroids, and depressive disorders related to the obstetric spectrum.

Dr Ingrid Gichere obtained her undergraduate degree in Medicine from University of Copenhagen, Denmark. After moving to Kenya in 2007 she started working within the public health sector before she proceeded for her postgraduate training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Aga Khan University, Nairobi. Since she graduated in 2015 she has been attached to Aga Khan University Hospital running several gynaecological and obstetric outpatient clinics.  

Dr Ingrid has a special interest in medical complications of pregnancy with focus on lifestyle related diseases including obesity. Her aim is to create awareness about non communicable diseases during pregnancy and to generate knowledge to aid the prevention of short- and long term complications. ​

Senior Instructor

Dr Bob Achila is a consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist. His subspecialties are Urogynaecology and Minimally Invasive Surgery. He completed a four-year residency training at Aga Khan University. He is fellowship trained in both France and Japan in state of the art advanced laparoscopic surgery for a full range of gynaecologic conditions. He also holds an MSc in clinical research epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). 

Dr Achila's areas of interest include the treatment of bladder problems and urinary incontinence in females. He conducts reconstructive surgery for patient with pelvic organ prolapse. His current role involves training and supervision of postgraduate students. He also runs various clinics both at the main hospital and outreach centres.

He is a member of various international bodies, including the International Urogynecological Association (IUGA) and the International Continence Society (ICS).

Dr Joan Okemo, MBChB, MMed (OB/GYN)
Clinical Senior Instructor​

Dr Joan Okemo is a Clinical Senior Instructor, Department of Obstetrician and Gynaecology. She holds a bachelor of medicine and surgery from the University of Nairobi. She completed a four-year residency in obstetrics and gynaecology at Aga Khan University Nairobi in 2018. On completion, she worked as a clinical instructor in the obstetrics and gynaecology department at Aga Khan University Hospital Nairobi and later joined the faculty team. She is involved in the training and supervision of postgraduate students.

Dr Okemo is passionate about overall women health and she coordinates and conducts public education on the same in various platforms. Her interests are in overall obstetrics and gynaecology health, fertility, minimal access surgery, research, medical education and mentorship. She is actively involved in research and has published in various peer review journals and published book chapter. She is a member of the Kenya Medical Association (KMA), the Kenya society of obstetricians and gynaecologists (KOGS) and European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE).

Dr Zoya Lalani, BMedSci, BMBS, MMed (OB/GYN)

Dr Lalana is an Instructor at the Aga Khan University Medical College, East Africa. She graduated from the University of Nottingham, UK with a BMedSci degree in 2010 and earned her BMBS from the same university in 2012. She earned an her MMed degree from the Aga Khan University Medical College, East Africa in 2020.

Dr Lalani is a member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, UK, Kenya Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society and the Kenya Society of Endoscopic Specialities.

Her arears of interests includes minimal access surgery, fertility medicine, medical complications in pregnancy, medical education and training.
