Course Description
The Advanced Level Course on Leadership in HPE focuses on increased understanding of leadership issues with emphasis on relating leadership theories, approaches and frameworks for problem-resolution and to strategic planning for academic and/or organizational change.
Eligibility
ALC-L is a core course for those admitted into the Master of HPE and Advanced Diploma in HPE programmes. It is also offered as a Standalone Course to all health care professionals in Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry and Allied Health with a proven interest/responsibility and at least two years teaching experience in HPE.
There are a limited number of seats, applicants will be shortlisted according to the specified selection criteria

Duration
This is a sixteen-week course from August 29 - December 16, 2022. It will include:
pre-reading
one-week full-time intensive interactive sessions (October 10-14, 2022)
independent study and written application-based project (ISWA-P) completion
Learning Objectives
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- analyze and evaluate their own and others' management and leadership practices
- develop a vision and mission statement for an educational programme and/or leadership challenge at the organization level
- develop a strategic plan for the stated mission
- analyze different leadership theories, different leadership approaches and the different frames
- analyze different leadership approaches and theories with their strengths and limitations
- relate the different leadership approaches to the different organizational frames
- critically analyze each frame for problem-resolution, and apply the four frames collectivelly
- identify important leadership challenges at programmatic, institutional, or national levels
apply theories of leadership in developing a solution and plan of action
critically analyze the leadership challenge through different organizational frameworks
analyze literature and research evidence from a range of sources to identify what others have done for the leadership challenge and what does not
develop an implementation plan using the different leadership approaches and organizational frames
Assessment
The assessment in this course is divided into the following two components which have to be passed separately.
- During the contact period, assessment will be based on individual and group assignments and presentations, contributions based on pre-readings, and the mid-semester assessment
- In the distance learning component, assessment will be based on completion and grading of an application based independent study and written assignment using all course material and best evidence medical education (BEME)
For satisfactory completion of the course requirements, student has to attain at least 55 per cent scores in continuous assessment, mid-semester assessment and the written assignments independently, with an overall aggregate of 60 per cent.
Educational Strategies
The course is highly participatory, offered through interactive plenaries, individual presentations, group case-based learning and presentations, other small group activities including role play. It also uses online faculty support for independent study and written assignment. There is special emphasis on critical thinking, problem-solving and decision-making through case-based learning approaches.
