Teaching

Undergraduate teaching

MBBS

The Section of Urology trains the year 5 and 3 students. The year 3 students have their designated sessions on inguinoscrotal and digital rectal examination and urological history taking. The students from year 3 have a three-week rotation, in the speciality, as part of the general surgery rotation in which they are attached to a consultant both in clinics and operating rooms. They are also involved in the day-to-day care of urological patients, the residents and interns, and academic activities like Journal clubs and Urology grand rounds. The students are given objectives of rotations at the start and are provided with a mid-rotation—also, and end of rotation feedback. The students are also encouraged to participate in new/ongoing research projects. In addition, the urology faculty contributes to the clinical skill teachings of the year 1 and 2 students and prepares cases for the renal and endocrine modules in the first two years of the PBL curriculum.

Postgraduate teaching

Internship programme

As a part of a surgical rotation, Urology offers a two-month internship programme with extensive and well-organized exposure to the wards, clinics, and operating rooms. The interns form an integral part of the team and are involved in clerking the patients, making a working plan, and training in performing procedures under supervision like difficult catheterizations, bladder washouts, Phlebotomies, and managing surgical tubes and drains and dressings. They are involved in all the aspects of In-patient care, including pre-operative workup, assistance with procedures in the operating room, and postoperative management. During the rotations, they receive ample exposure to oncology, stone disease, female urology, and andrology patients both in-patient and outpatient setting.

Residency programme

The urology residency programme was started in the year 1993. This programme is recognized by the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Pakistan, for FCPS training in Urology and by the Royal College of Surgeons and the European Board of Urology. The residents are selected as PGY 1 (earmarked for urology after undergoing a 2-year surgery rotation at AKUH) and PGY 3 (after the completion of core surgery training). It is a four-year residency programme involving extensive and well-organized exposure to all aspects of urology. The residents are responsible for managing the in-patient and outpatient and work in consultation with attending consultants to organize the operating room list and assist and perform surgical procedures under direct supervision. The rotations are in accordance with the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan. Academics and research are an integral part of this training and involve teaching morning rounds, core curriculum, journal club, quality assurance meetings, grand rounds, and presentation of proposals and research projects. In addition, the residents also go for their internship (electives) in renal transplantation and Paediatric Urology disciplines.
