Professor Syed Ather Enam, Chair of the Department of Surgery, at the Aga Khan University, was conferred the Sitara-i-Imtiaz – the third highest civilian award by the Government of Pakistan – for his achievements in the field of medicine by President Mamnoon Hussain.
Dr Enam, whose 24-year long career has seen him work at major hospitals in the United States and Pakistan, is one of three awardees in the field of medicine this year.
After completing his PhD from the Northwestern University in 1991,
Dr Enam honed his surgical expertise in the US for 12 years before returning to Pakistan in 2003 to join the Aga Khan University.
He joined AKU as an Associate Professor in Neurosurgery in 2003 and developed a state-of-the-art neurosurgery programme that has trained a new generation of surgeons for Pakistan. Dr Enam has published acclaimed research on brain tumours and is an expert in minimally invasive spine surgery.
Dr Enam has previously been awarded the Excellence Award in Neurosurgery by the Pakistan Society of Neurosurgery in 2004, the Physician of the Year Medallion Award by St Joseph’s Mercy of Macomb Hospital, USA, in 2002 and the Outstanding Resident Award by Henry Ford Hospital, USA, in 1998. He is a life member of Sigma Xi, a scientific research honor society, as well as founding president of the Pakistan Society of Basic and Applied Neuroscience.
Speaking about the award, Dr Enam said: “I’m honoured to receive the award and glad to have laid the foundations for neurosurgical research and training at one of Pakistan’s leading hospitals. The award may be given to an individual but it actually reflects on the institution and everybody who works here. I am proud to be called an AKU doctor.”
The award will be presented to Dr Enam in an investiture ceremony on Pakistan Day, March 23, 2017.
