The Aga Khan University’s Institute for the study of Muslim Civilisations (AKU-ISMC) has launched its first field school of Islamic archaeology in Tanzania in cooperation with the Tanzanian Antiquities, the World Monuments Fund (WMF) and University of Cape Town, Division of Geomatics, Zamani Project “African Cultural Heritage Sites and Landscapes Project”.
The Tanzanian trainees were introduced to medieval and Islamic archaeology in Africa, rescue and salvage excavations, building archaeology and architectural heritage, ceramic drawing, laser scanning, GPS technology, photogrammetry, 3D modelling software, Geographic Information Systems and animation software.
