High flow nasal cannula (HFNC) is a safe, well-tolerated, and non-invasive method of respiratory support that has seen increasing use in the care of children with respiratory distress. A one-day simulation-based course was offered in collaboration with the Department of Emergency to improve the skills of registered nurses in the use of HFNC and its management.
SimBaby was used to deliver a high fidelity paediatric simulation experience. Nurses worked in small groups to have an equal learning opportunity. They learned the indication of using HFNC, performed primary and secondary assessment of patient as per PALS guidelines, managed difficult airway through non-invasive mode of ventilation, and learned the application of HFNC device. This course made them familiar with the benefits and pitfall of HFNC. Debriefing was conducted at the end to reflect upon nurses' experiences, discuss what went well in the simulation and identify opportunities for improvement.
