The Clinical Simulation Educators Programme (CSEP) has proven to be vital in developing the capacity of faculty to conduct simulation-based education (SBE) at the Aga Khan University. Offered by the centre's qualified educators, with contributions from experienced faculty, this five-day intensive in-person programme is tailored to provide just-in-time learning to participants priming them with skills and knowledge to incorporate clinical simulation in their teaching tool-box. With the advent of the pandemic and due to the high demand for the CSEP internally and internationally, the course was adapted to 8 weeks Online allowing participants to have both synchronous and asynchronous sessions. Once per week, live teaching and demonstration sessions introduced themed participant-led seminars. These written papers posed relevant questions that were taken up on the discussion forum. The student presenter then moderated the discussion and concluded the main points at the end of the week. All students had the opportunity to present a paper and have their ideas critically appraised by their colleagues. Participation dramatically improved after 2-3 weeks.
The first Clinical Simulation Educators Programme Online (CSEPO) was offered in October 2020 and had 24 registered participants from Pakistan and Kenya, 19 of whom completed. Upon faculty evaluation and review, it was clear that through different teaching strategies, participants had covered core essentials of SBE and felt confident in utilizing clinical simulation as a teaching strategy. Participants also expressed their appreciation towards the course design and its delivery.
With this positive evaluation, and the demand to provide educators with up-to-date knowledge in clinical simulation, the next offering of CSEPO is in April 2021 and has been redesigned for a more manageable 6 weeks. The course will be marketed to a more international audience, allowing participants to interact and network with colleagues from across the globe. CSEPO will not replace the existing CSEP, a faster-paced hands-on course, but will add to our repertoire of educational offerings by CIME.
