The transition of undergraduate medical students from pre-clinical to clinical years is an exciting yet daunting process. Students are expected to be well-equipped with knowledge as well as critical thinking skills whilst being able to exhibit adequate dexterity in their work. In order to make this transition smooth and less stressful, we provided these students with an opportunity to practice their skills and knowledge in a safe simulated environment without the hesitation and fear of harming patients.
A total of 101 students participated in this module. They were divided into smaller groups to ensure effective learning. There were four stations with various clinical scenarios; each scenario lasted 60 minutes and included a demonstration, hands-on practice, and sign-off. Students were also given reading materials and demo videos beforehand to ensure they were adequately prepared for each scenario. The programme concluded with a grand debriefing that included students feedback. Overall, it was an excellent first of its kind initiative created in collaboration with AKU's medicine and nursing faculty.
