The Interim Dean of the Aga Khan University's Graduate School of Media and Communications (GSMC), Prof. Nancy Booker, was a jury member for Konrad Adenur Stiftung (KAS) Media Africa's inaugural Award for Local Journalism, held on January 31st 2023 in Windhoek, Namibia. The aim of the awards was to recognize significant local journalism that is presented with a high journalistic standard.
Joining Prof. Booker as part of the jury were Nwabisa Makunga – Editor for The Sowetan from South Africa, Yannick Dillinger – Editor in Chief of Augsburger Allgemeine a daily paper in Germany, Jasmin Off - Head of Regional Digital Transformation at the Madsack Media Group and Jan Jessen – Faculty member with the University of Copenhagen. The awards attracted 199 submissions from 28 countries in Africa, had 12 finalists with print, audio and video features.
Submissions for the award needed to be in English or French, focus on global news features but looked for stories that included local reporting and contextual application coupled with high journalism standards. Supporting documents for submission included a summary of where the story was published and feedback from audiences in as much as possible.
The awards recognized three winners: Raquel Muigai from Africa Uncensored – Kenya, Jeff Wicks from News24 – RSA and Esther Oluka from the Daily Monitor – Uganda. They are from Kenya, South Africa and Uganda respectively. The three winners will attend a fact-finding tour of innovative local journalism Newsrooms in Germany.
Prof. Booker has an illustrious career as an academic, teacher, researcher and media practitioner with over 18 years teaching and academic administration experience. Prof Booker specializes in broadcast journalism, multimedia storytelling, media management and health communication. She currently serves as a board member in the East African Communication Association, and also a commissioner with the Media Council of Kenya (MCK) Complaints Commission.
KAS is the Regional Media Programme for Sub-Sahara Africa of the German Konrad Adenauer Foundation.
