The EyeSurg Tournament has become a remarkable example of partnership between the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences and the Centre for Innovation in Medical Education. The tournament engages residents and students in a competitive and safe learning environment where they can practice eye surgery and improve their surgical skills on simulators. The inaugural tournament was held in August 2021, organized by a team led by Dr. M. Bilal Malik, Resident year IV of Ophthalmology at AKU.
Since its inception, the EyeSurg Tournament has been organized four times, drawing participants from a range of institutions including the Aga Khan University, the Harvard Medical School's Department of Ophthalmology, the New England Eye Center at Tufts University, the UMass Memorial Eye Center, Isra University, Shifa College of Medicine in Islamabad, and Sindh Institute of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences in Hyderabad.
Most recently, the EyeSurg Tournaments were held for the Harvard Medical School's Department of Ophthalmology and the UMass Memorial Eye Center, USA. These tournaments have set a benchmark for future events, with other institutes already scheduled to conduct similar tournaments in the future. Plans are also underway to host an International EyeSurg Tournament, where residents and institutes from all over the world will compete in this unique activity.
This tournament is an excellent example of how technology can be used to enhance healthcare education and training. The success of these tournaments demonstrates the potential for simulation-based training to revolutionize healthcare education and training in the future.
