Professor Marleen Temmerman, a distinguished leader in women and girls’ health and rights, is set to receive the prestigious title of ‘Commander in the Order of Leopold’ from His Majesty King Philippe of Belgium. This esteemed honour recognizes Professor Temmerman’s exceptional contributions to the field of women and girls’ health, equity and rights.
The award ceremony will take place on November 21, 2024, at the Royal Palace in Brussels, Belgium. Prof Marleen is the Director of the Centre of Excellence in Women and Child Health, East Africa (COEWCH, EA) at Aga Khan University, and holds the position of AKU-UNESCO Chair in Youth Leadership in Science, Health, Gender, and Education.

The reputable professor and polymath in reproductive health has earned numerous awards and achievements including a Lifetime Achievement Award by the British Medical Journal, the Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear by former Kenyan president Uhuru Kenyatta, and meritorious gynaecologist from FIGO, the International Federation of Gynaecologists and Midwives.
